Description

Ripalta, our highest quality 100% Umbrian DOP extra virgin olive oil.

While several Italian regions produce olive oil, Umbria produces one of the very highest quality oils. Our olives come from Umbrian hills owned by a storied, aristocratic family for many centuries.

The name of the oil, “Ripalta”, takes its name from the castle of our family, the Marchesi Misciattelli Bernardini. This is a land full of Etruscan tombs, Roman ruins, fertile soil for vineyards and olive groves in a staggeringly gorgeous countryside.

We are deep in the Umbrian countryside and use no pesticides. Every olive grows in the sun and wind and rain on these beautiful and historic hills. Our olive varieties include frantoio, leccino, and moraiolo. We press them almost immediately after they are harvested from the trees, which is critical for a pure and salubrious product.

Ripalta has a small, boutique production grown at a high elevation compared to most producers. Our output per tree is smaller but the quality much higher. Ripalta is in limited production.

Ripalta, unlike many supermarket olive oils, has the following characteristics:

  • 100% of olives sourced from one place like ours. Seek 100% Italian or 100% Spanish or 100% Greek, but never a mix. Beware of European Union oil mixes. Also beware of “Tuscan” oil that actually uses Tunisian olives but processes in Tuscany – sadly you may never really know the truth as they are not required to put this on the label. With our oil, we personally pick the olives off of our trees here in Umbria. It’s our guarantee to you.DOP olive oil, which is even more specific. This is like DOC for wine. It means in Italian “Protected Designation of Origin”. The olives come not just from one country but a very specific zone within an Italian region. Our olives are DOP “Colli Orvietani”, which means the Hills above Orvieto. Every olive grew in the Italian sun and wind and rain on those hills.
  • Extra virgin olive oil, not just olive oil. This means that the olive oil can have a maximum of 0.8% acidity.
  • Polyphenols. These naturally occurring olive compounds have significant health benefits towards digestion, diabetes, heart health, and cancers. Did you know that olive oil is classified as a medicine by the FDA? This is due to its extraordinary health benefits.

ANALYSES OF RIPALTA

We knew we planned to enter some international olive oil competitions this year, but we didn’t realize quite how spectacular the results of our analyses would be.

Examples from our 2020 harvest include:

Color: Green
Aroma: Olive Fruity
Product: Extra virgin olive oil  (this is a classification based on many factors including low acidity, it’s not simply olive oil)
Acidity:  This is an extraordinary low acidity. In the USA, an olive oil must be below 0.8% to be classified as Extra Virgin, and in Italy below 0.6%.  With 0.1% we are off the charts.
Polyphenols:  This is an extraordinarily high level of polyphenols, which are organic compounds occurring naturally in olives and critical for human healthy brains, hearts, and bodies in general. Polyphenols contribute to a delicious peppery, almost tart flavor especially when the oil is new. So when you taste this pepperiness it means you have quality! There is a great deal of information about polyphenols on the internet, it is an antiviral, antibacterial, and much more.
Lack of carcinogens: There is a great deal of fraud in the olive oil market and few controls. Many foods have some level of carcinogens. Our olive oil was tested and came back with 13 pages of negative results for carcinogens. We are a 100% salubrious product. Olive oil of our quality is used in hospitals in the diets of patients due to its lack of carcinogens. Remember too, the FDA classifies olive oil as a medicine.

A few more details about our olive oil: We are officially certified as a DOP olive oil, “Denominazione Origine Protetta”, which is a whole lot of Italian to say Protected Location Label. We can use only olives indigenous to this region and the oil is subject to many more controls and analyses. The common analogy is Champagne which cannot be produced in California or Spain or Italy, only that one microregion of France. Our DOP is Umbria Colli Orvietani, the hills around Orvieto, and our olives are moraiolo, frantoio, and leccino cultivars. The olives grow at an altitude higher than 400 meters, which results in lower quantity production but higher quality oil.

We produce small batch quantities only, as we are not interested in large scale industrial production. Our family has farmed these hills and fields since at least 1200.

On the business side of things, we express airmail your olive oil directly to you. It is not sitting on a container ship for weeks or in a warehouse at the port. We are also officially registered with the FDA and work with an American importer to facilitate the customs processes.

In short, this is not your average grocery store olive oil!

    Dear Ellen,
The plastic cover is great, it preserves every drop and I love it. The olive oil taste is so unique, rich, heavy texture melts in your mouth like no other. I’ve been having a small teaspoon raw every day plus adding it to salads! I have not cooked with it yet, too afraid to waste it…LOL. I am going to order another batch. I hope you have more left? Warm hugs! Best Regards,
    Munira Jamil

    Ellen,
We got our olive oil the other day; it is delicious! Grassy, fresh, and makes us think of you!
Looking forward to having it with home grown tomatoes next summer. For now we are enjoying it with On the Rise bread and on our salad.
    Happy December!

Is it possible to overdose on olive oil?

  4. Robert R.

Yes and an elegant bottle shape and label. The pouring insert is a type I have never seen before, promotes careful drizzling. Well packaged, arrived in perfect shape.
No heads up or tracking from shipping company though, I am glad we both work from home and were around to find it quickly.
Ellen you should be very proud of this project!

We got ours yesterday. Absolutely splendid! The bottles are so elegant. The flavor is, by far, the freshest I’ve ever tasted. I’m trying to keep my 14 year old out of it, but hey, she’s a great cook and loves the taste.
